Online Education Inspiration, from Daphne Koller
Daphne Koller What we’re learning from online education, is a must see, it is one thing to let us know about the problems with our education system, but to be at the fore-front of providing a solution for these problems is more of what we need. Dreamers who are doing.
“Daphne Koller is enticing top universities to put their most intriguing courses online for free — not just as a service, but as a way to research how people learn. With Coursera (cofounded by Andrew Ng), each keystroke, quiz, peer-to-peer discussion and self-graded assignment builds an unprecedented pool of data on how knowledge is processed.(source Ted Talks)
Coursera.org is the online education web site co- founded by Daphne Koller and Andrew NG. Coursera.org has about 198 course’s in a wide range of topics. They operate like real courses with deadlines, tests. During her Ted Talk, she mentioned people do create local study groups, or ask questions online in a group environment that does promote a sense of community as if you were in a class.
There seem to be many advantages with this type of learning environment, first you can learn at your own pace at your convenience depending on what time of the day you have available. The people taking these classes Want to learn, so they are going to get more out of the content. You can ask questions, and get feedback from others taking the course, it is a global community as well which is great because you can get many different perspectives. The courses are more interactive instead of being in a lecture, so you are forced into being engaged.
This seems to be the best way to get people motivated. When every I have been teaching someone about Programming issues it always works better if the student is doing the work, solving the problems, understanding the WHY and How, instead of me just telling them what to do and they just memorize sequences as opposed to the Logic behind the sequences.
Education is the key to solving problems and providing solutions for the things we need. We need to never stop learning, this is a great way to develop knowledge. Learn something new, develop new Interests.
