Blue Lizard Farm,
The First Steps, Layout Your Plan
Want to learn about the first steps in laying out your farm and planning for success, we speak to an expert in the field.
A Business plan is absolutely essential. It’s important to work out all of the financial and before you spend the money. And then you have to have a business plan in order to get a farm loan, whether it’s from an agricultural bank. If you get rejected from them, then you can go to the FSA. But if you don’t have a good plan, nobody’s going to want to lend you money.
So part of your business plan is that you need to find out if what you’re planning to grow pencils out and makes money. All of us are passionate about our growing and what we’re doing. But in the end, we’ve got to be able to pay the bills and pay ourselves something. We’re going to go see Carol Bishop, who is an extension agent, and she specializes in farm finances.
Blue Lizard Farm,
Choosing a Farming Method
Growing Produce in the Nevada Desert: Focuses on the challenges of growing produce in the Nevada desert, including temperature fluctuations and high pH soil, highlighting the importance of hoop houses.
Conventional Farming
In my opinion, the reason that conventional farming gets such a bad rap is because they continued to play the same crops over and over again, and do heavy tillage. When you turn the soil, you’re turning all your microbes upside down, so you’re killing them off as you’re burying the ones that are surface microbes, and you’re bringing the low microbes to the surface.

First, you gotta find the water by the land. Drill the well. Then you got to plant your cover crops. Then two of the last five years in and cover crops counts for the NRCS Hoop House program. Then apply for the hoop house programs.

A day in the Life of Blue Lizard Farm
Rodney gives us a preview of what a day in the life of a farmer might entail
I usually try to get up and going, into the office an hour before my crew arrives. It gives me time to check my emails. Then, just before the crews come, I will head out and kind of assess what needs to be accomplished.
It’s really important that you keep your people busy because they’re costing you money, and you want to be as efficient as you can possibly be with their time. So I go out and I figure out what it is we need to cut what passes need to be watered, make sure there’s nothing being stressed, check for disease, critter problems, whatever may be affecting the crops.
Then, the crews arrive. I get them lined out. We get started washing, cleaning, harvesting, vegetables.
Blue Lizard Farm, Farm Equipment Land Prep
When we first got started, there wasn’t a lot of tools for specialty crop farmers, and we had to kind of adapt as we went along. Now there’s companies out there that are building equipment just for specialty crop producers.
Tractors
Most of your tractor work will be needed at the start of your operation on new ground. If there are other farmers in your area, consider sharing the cost of big equipment.
Rototillers- I have one but have not used it for years. In the beginning, you might need one to help move organic compost into the soil. Once you get your beds set up, I don’t recommend deep tillage any longer. Rototillers tend to disturb too much of the microbiome and do more harm than good.
A good square shovel. We mostly use it for when we have our our leftover crop residual, when we’re what we call turning the beds and reestablishing and replanting. We rake up into piles and, flat shovel is great for gathering those piles, putting in your barrel and taking it to the compost heap.
Farm Equipment Maintenance and Harvest
Hoss Wheel Hoe
I haven’t really named products, but this has been my friend for since the beginning. We bought it once. I’ve been through two sets of handles, but it is just absolutely essential to get your weeds between your walkways. We used to use it to take out your last crops before we plant the new crop.
Collinear Hoe
The hoe is probably for us, the most important tool we use. This hoe is used for removing weeds around plants. It works really well and edges of hoop houses can be very beneficial. But mostly it really works. There’s lots of dexterity you can get around, plants that you’ve planted and get rid of your weeds.
Soil Testing
Sometimes you need to test your soil on your own. The tools that you have to do that, is really important and with the right p-h means you, are able to make nutrients available to the plants. And so sometimes you’re having problems, but you don’t have time to send off a soil sample
Farm Equipment replanting the next Crop
Sod Cutter
After years of green crop removal with the wheel hoe. I found an old sod cutter for sale. It is like a gas-powered wheel hoe. So after we cut the crop remains, I just let it set and it’ll dry out. Within a day, by tomorrow, we can rake this up, and we could plant right away.
Lawn Mower
Mowers- A good lawn mower will help speed up clean up for your cut-and-come-again greens.
Plus, if you set the height of your mower just right it resets your plants for a better cut the next round.
Landscape Rake
A good rake is important for cleaning up crop residuals so you can get your beds ready for the next planting.
Broadfork
Over time soils will become compacted. Broadforks break up the compaction without turning over the soil.
Blue Lizard Farm an Education Series, Weed and Pest Control
Weed Control
Weeds are always going to be an issue, but they can be less of an issue over time. And in the hoop houses. You can even get it down to. I will never say 100% of weeds, but I think you can, you know, get your weeds situation under control 95%.
Now, if I was to start a brand new hoop house, I would do a deep tell. The first time we’d bring in, we’d probably bring in. We normally would put like 10 or 12 yards of compost in here. So we’ve got 2 or 3in throughout the whole house. Then we till that into the profile. After that we’re done.
Pest Control
Every farm has aphids in in. You’re not going to completely eliminate them. Depending on whether you go with traditional type farming, using pesticides to control your pests. Or you go the organic method. And there are quite a few organic pesticides that are out there.
Blue Lizard Farm an Education Series,
Post Harvest Handling & Marketing
Post Harvest Handling & Marketing
You’ve spent two months preparing your beds, finding your seeds, your crop is growing, you’ve got spinach and you’ve got spring mix to harvest the most important thing that we can do for any crop that we grow is post-harvest handling.
Food Hub
One of the hardest things in the beginning for me was being a farmer, growing the crop, finding places where I’m going to market the crop. Farmers need to farm, marketers need to market. Drivers need to drive sales. People’s need to sell. Now we’re going to go to Peak Greens and talk to Alex Pope about how he’s organizing our food hub.
Blue Lizard Farm an Education Series, Mental Health
Farming is hard. It’s stressful. It’s usually heavily debt laden, and so there’s a lot of pressure on the fibers. It’s really important that we work hard on our mental health. Farming has the highest suicide rate in the nation. And even though I’m here trying to encourage people to farm, you need to be aware of that. But it’s manageable.
And if you make the right choices in the beginning, then you can create an environment that you will love. I was at a conference and there was organizations there that were concerned about farmers mental health. So it’s important that we take the time to seek out those organizations. If you’re having problems and get the help that you need, it’s available.
Use it.
We spoke to some experts about this topic.
